(Viet Bao) They Came to Orange County…
Originally authored by Nam Loc on VietBao
They are the Afghan refugees who were rescued from the country by the US government at the last hour. They are strangers who have just been brought in by Charities to settle in the Orange County area. Although "people" are strange, the situation is very familiar, which is what Vietnamese refugees had to go through more than 40 years ago. No relatives, no friends, no community, no home, no job… Is it different that Vietnamese people have been fortunate enough to be guaranteed and cared for by their parishioners, churches, or generous sponsors? for the first steps of exile life. They rent ready-made houses, find jobs, teach driving, take care of schools for the children of Vietnamese refugee families, etc.
Similar to our situation in April, 1975. Most of the Afghan refugees were rescued because of their close connection to the US government. Working collaboratively, and fighting side by side with allied troops for 20 years, to fight the Taliban and ISIS. Many people have died while supporting and protecting the safety of American citizens in Afghanistan. For these reasons, they were finally fortunate enough to be brought out of this troubled country.
The big difference, however, is that America was not prepared for a systematic evacuation plan like 46 years ago, when Saigon fell. Currently, many volunteer agencies have stopped working, only about 3 VOLAGs remain in Los Angeles and Orange County, but because of the lack of careful calculation of the responsible people, the Afghan refugees have They do not have the support of churches or parishes, or sponsors, so they are living temporarily in motels or hotels around LA and OC until they can rent a house.
Unfortunately, the strange guests, wet feet, dry feet coming here did not have the credit that the landlords demanded. If you don't have a job, how can the landlord dare to rent it out?
But if I have the opportunity to sit down, to convince the hosts, I will analyze them so that they know: These Afghan refugees will receive a settlement of $2275.00 per capita to spend within 3 months. head. After that time, if they do not have a job, they will receive help from the government in the form of social assistance. And so, it is considered that they will have enough money to live (similar to our Vietnamese community in the past).
They are also allowed to work immediately after leaving the camp, and because they are interpreters for the US military, or employees of US agencies, most of them have English skills, ready to accept jobs. .
That is why settlement agencies and the Afghan Refugee Relief charity, earnestly call on the Vietnamese community to lend a hand and help with the following:
1. If you have a house for rent, please understand and reduce the requirements for credit as well as security deposit in the meantime until they have a job.
2. If you are a business, factory or restaurant owner and need help, you can also provide jobs for these new refugees.
3. If you're not a landlord, but want to help them through this difficult first step, you can: One, co-sign them to rent. Second, introduce them to the landlords you already know. Third, if there is enough space, let them stay for a while.
4. In addition, you can also sponsor a family or help, provide furniture, furniture, TV, refrigerator or finance, etc.
